Beyond the Bottom Line: Transforming HR to Reinspire the Future of Work

Navigating the intricate landscape of human resource management has always been a daunting task. While HR has certainly grown more proficient over the years, there's scarce systematic evidence to confirm the effectiveness of its various 'ideal' configurations or its multitude of best practices. Meanwhile, our challenges are mounting, with demands pouring in from all directions, and a growing need for responsible engagement with societal crises. It's tempting to believe that further reengineering, cost-cutting, technology gimmicks, or simply riding high on the 'employee experience-mindfulness-happiness' train can resolve our issues, but deep down we all know it's not that simple. If we persist in treating HR merely as a tool for higher performance and share prices, we’ll miss the opportunity to address today's pressing challenges and make a meaningful impact long-term. During our session, we'll examine HR's historical evolution, challenge some long-standing practices, and explore a fresh role for HR that safeguards the development of the internal community while genuinely contributing to the society at large. To inspire a more promising future of work, we must muster the moral courage to go beyond the appeal of new tools and tactics, and instead prioritise the nurturing of wisdom and character within and beyond our organizations. But this requires, above all else, a profound transformation of HR.
