Creating capability, developing culture – which to do when and why

JON INGHAM, Director - STRATEGIC HR ACADEMY

"Culture is the most discussed aspect of organisation, even if people often mean different things when they use the word. But a more important term to use in connection with business performance is capability. Both items are intangible, but capability is more precise, and can be managed more easily to meet particular requirements. However, culture is important too, and is increasingly relevant given the need for a more people-centric approach. We usually need both, often at the same time, but which we prioritise most makes a big difference to the impacts we provide, and the way we should go about developing the two properties too. We potentially waste huge amounts of time and effort developing one when the other is more appropriate, and vice versa. Streamline your work and increase your impacts by understanding which you should focus on and when, how you should go about developing them and managing their interconnectedness too."

Beyond the Bottom Line: Transforming HR to Reinspire the Future of Work

OTTI VOGT, Founder - GOOD ORGANISATIONS, former COO - ING C&G
ANTOINETTE WEIBEL, Professor, Chair of Human Resources Management – UNIVERSITY OF ST GALLEN, Co-Founder – GOOD ORGANISATIONS

"Navigating the intricate landscape of human resource management has always been a daunting task. While HR has certainly grown more proficient over the years, there's scarce systematic evidence to confirm the effectiveness of its various 'ideal' configurations or its multitude of best practices. Meanwhile, our challenges are mounting, with demands pouring in from all directions, and a growing need for responsible engagement with societal crises. It's tempting to believe that further reengineering, cost-cutting, technology gimmicks, or simply riding high on the 'employee experience-mindfulness-happiness' train can resolve our issues, but deep down we all know it's not that simple. If we persist in treating HR merely as a tool for higher performance and share prices, we’ll miss the opportunity to address today's pressing challenges and make a meaningful impact long-term. During our session, we'll examine HR's historical evolution, challenge some long-standing practices, and explore a fresh role for HR that safeguards the development of the internal community while genuinely contributing to the society at large. To inspire a more promising future of work, we must muster the moral courage to go beyond the appeal of new tools and tactics, and instead prioritise the nurturing of wisdom and character within and beyond our organizations. But this requires, above all else, a profound transformation of HR."

Keynote: What’s next for HR to create value in the ever-changing business context?

DAVE ULRICH, Rensis Likert Professor of Business Ross School of Business, University of Michigan

"(This session is recorded at the HORIZON SUMMIT, broadcasted exclusively at The HR Congress WorldSummit online) We all recognize and experience the changing business context with technology (openAI), social, political, economic, climate, and lifestyle trends. As a result of these trends, people and organization issues are top of mind for business executives, boards, customers, investors, and regulators. These trends will require new assumptions about the future of work today and HR’s evolving role to respond to these assumptions. This keynote will highlight four emerging assumptions: connecting the inside to the outside (outside/in), harnessing uncertainty, personalizing work, and navigating paradox. We will explore how these assumptions require a new perspective on HR’s value contribution, moving from personnel to human resources to human capital to human capability. Participants will glimpse into the future of work and fold that future into today’s specific actions to flourish and thrive. Now is THE time for HR to rise to the opportunities ahead."
